What is Stock Category Reclassification?

Every six months, AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India) recalibrates the market capitalization buckets. Because Mutual Funds have strict mandates (e.g., a Large Cap fund must invest 80% in stocks ranked 1-100), a Category Shift is a significant regulatory event.

Category Shifts & Funds

When a stock moves from Mid Cap to Large Cap, it enters the investment universe for Large-cap Mutual Funds. This often prompts institutional rebalancing as funds adjust their holdings to align with the new official categories.

Institutional Rebalancing

A move from Large Cap to Mid Cap might lead to sell-side rebalancing by Large-cap schemes as they ensure their portfolios remain compliant with SEBI's classification rules.
